Lacuna
TO 29 JANUARY 2017
Winner of the Provisional Assemblages Open Call
Always interested in the confusion of meanings generated by the translation of the same sign into different languages, the Lacuna project depicts a new weaving of reality on which to attach an interpretative device conceived by us through the slavish reiteration of the writing, through private performance, the transfer of comprehension to a time and place that is different from now, to the final installation made of overlapping and intersecting plains, refractions and obstacles.
Lacunawas born from the interpretation of a practical and symbolic motive, of a dichotomous declaration of belonging to a gender, in the way that it is the conferment of a person’s proper name. The study of the formation of gender identity originates from the assignment of the name, established as fundamental to the individual from the start. In the project Lacuna, it is rooted in the analysis of a historical, social and cultural product, such as the foundling wheel of the Basilica of SS. Annunziata Maggiore in Napoli, where newborn babies were abandoned. Our research begins by totally resetting the acceptance of a gender, specifically wanting to rethink the absolute annulment of a person’s individuality, offering new possible definitions and new stories to write. Lacuna, as an intentional omission, seeks to establish the existence of a bigger totality.
