Giacinto Scelsi
Suite IX Ttai (1953)
Suite X Ka (1954)
Several witnesses confirmed the premonition expressed by Scelsi in the last years of his life, “I will leave this earth when the sign of infinity is lined up”. On the night of the 8th August 1988, the composer fell into a coma and he died the following morning. His relationship with life and music had always had a strongly metaphysical content and various supernatural experiences accompanied the fame of one of the most discussed and original personalities of the late twentieth century.
His compositional procedures, his global vision of cosmic events, in which sound plays a fundamental part, are at the heart of his most important compositions, such as the Suite IX and Suite X for piano.
Both of these were composed in the middle period of his life, when his poetics reached full maturity, in the 1950s. They are “themed” works, in the sense that they are constructed and inspired by metaphysical concepts. Suite IX, Ttai (Pace) is linked to the representation of Time, in movement, in construction, in e-stasis. Suite X, Ka (Essenza) is structured on essential variations of its basic technique, its repeated notes, and presents seven distinct characteristics of a unique spiritual planet.
