Death is a territory from which we are precluded.

To us, the living, the promised migration is postponed every day; we end up not believing it. Others always die, who appear to be silent witnesses, shipwrecks of a mysterious landing carried out in their absence.

Without respite, we note and certify the death of others, obvious yet unknowable. As for our own death, not being able to share the direct experience (I’m dead!), we will attempt literary or domestic representations of it.

The revealing page of our death remains empty, but in the margins, the notes of fear and prophesy crowd together. Familiar traces list only modalities: a disordered catalogue of the appearance of death, the clothes that it will wear when meeting us. A disturbing exercise, but there is time; this is what we tell ourselves as we listen to the clock ticking.

The written/sketched is misleading comment, artifice, a way to turn around. In the silence and chatter, in the Babel of mocking graphism and pitch blackness, it is right to search for traces, then once surrendered, turn back; there is no death here.
