The performative approach of Alexandra Pirici (Bucharest, 1982) & Manuel Pelmuş (Bucharest, 1974) is centred on the practice of enactment, or “staging”, as aconscious strategy, to transform and actualise, through embodiment, emblematic and lesser known works in the history of art, thereby laying claim, in a subversive fashion, to the humanity of history and substance. In this way, paintings, actions, sculptures and monuments are re-interpreted by bodies staging compositions based on their “simple” physical substance, without the aid of scenery or objects, not even clothing. The “new” works created become emanations of the originals, through a conscious attempt to reclaim history, to lessen the burden or to de-monumentalise and at the same time make them current. In “Untitled”, produced by the Associazione Culturale Dello Scompiglio, Alexandra Pirici & Manuel Pelmus use similar strategies as in previous works to recreate a single, long action, but focussed exclusively on the theme of gender.
