What moves breath between things: that transpires,
that cracks between taking and giving, between stealing
pieces of the world and releasing breath into the world in pieces?

With Breathing room Salvo Lombardo leans into the breath, approaching it as a poetic act. The work consists mainly in the invention of an ideal and dilated space in which to “catch one’s breath” and in which to practice the artist’s loss of control over the artistic act itself.
The dramaturgy, which draws inspiration from Il silenzio è cosa viva by Chandra Livia Candiani, is informed by a series of solicitations and suggestions that Salvo Lombardo has received over time as a gift from various people, colleagues and friends, who have contributed to the training of breath as a significant substance and as an open field of meanings.
Conceived as an environment in constant formation, Breathing room is a performance that relies on the voice, but also on the body: a room, an ideal perimeter of relationship, informed by a voice that projects a saying and evokes a doing between oral meditation / guided practice / environmental sound installation / performative podcast.
Each opening of this “breathing room” constitutes an un-reproducible unicum, which is based on an invitation to a different artist from the field of dance and performance, in this version, Stefania Tansini, to inhabit this relational perimeter, together with the present audience, by activating a performance determined in real time, without rehearsals, nor previews, nor future reprises, thanks to the combination of the hints of the ambient voice and the suggestions that the performer receives through the headset and who decides how and whether to act.
The invitation is thus substantialised as an act of complicity as well as a radical expression of a ‘being-now’ and as an opportunity to question, by breathing, the principles of authority and individual power that underlie the production system of art: an invitation by which to be carried, an attitude to listening, an exercise in vulnerability and relationality that can suggest an act of mutual care.
Breathing room is a part of the reflection on “care” being carried out with the Lavanderia a Vapore di Collegno, of which Salvo Lombardo is an associate artist.
