Alfa – notes on the question of manliness is a piece of work in which, inside a traditional scenic set, words, dance and live music combine with each other into a simple theatrical form, which yet departs from conventional categories.
ALFA is a reflection on male identity and its construction, and therefore a reflection on the power and the mechanisms of its intergenerational transmission, in which the female role is not at all marginal.
“When one looks around, one naturally tends to think that being a European white heterosexual Christian male over fifty years who is reasonably healthy, practices sports, is well-educated, with healthy adult offspring, is professionally rather successful and has no serious economic problems is not exactly an unfavourable condition, especially if one considers how much pain in the arse, discrimination, harassment and violence all those who lack even just one of the above-mentioned requirements are exposed and often subjected to by my social category.
However, belonging to an exclusive standard still means belonging to a standard – which, by definition, is an unnatural condition. In short, at least as far as I myself am concerned, having managed to be a European white heterosexual Christian male who is reasonably healthy, practices sports, is well-educated, with healthy adult offspring, is professionally rather successful and has no serious economic problems is the result of a process as spontaneous and natural as that of feet binding in Chinese concubines in the 19th century. Which means that I have the suspicion that I have learned, in time and with patient self-learning, to dismember something different form myself in such convincing manner that, practically, I don’t even notice it myself anymore.”
