Which body has a legal and political status? Which body has the right to live today?
The migrant who crosses the Mediterranean sea to seek new life in Fortress Europe and who instead finds death is a symbolic image of what, together with the philosopher Paul b. Preciado, we define as necropolitics. Necropolitics is the condition in which sovereignty claims the power to give death. The logic of the frontier and the sovereignty of the European states are part of the necropolitics. In the last three years 15 thousand people have died in the Mediterranean sea, and it is probably an estimate by default. Who are the cannibals?
Cannibals is born from a raw and disturbing vision: a drowned body eaten by fishes. The body in the artwork then becomes a symbol of the migrant but also of all of us: who are we? What is humanity in this Third Millennium? A humanity poised between being able to reproduce artificially indefinitely through new technologies and the risk of being extinguished very soon, unless we change our life habits and our devastating impact on the planet. Cannibals is a mirror work, which connects with all these reflections and takes part of this contradiction, (re) producing a cycle of life and death in an aquarium. And if we humans are an endangered species, will Nature take back the advantage?
