The Wood is a project that uses an ancient embroidery technique known as frivolité. The thread is worked using a shuttle that creates knots. These knots join together to form flower patterns that become decorative lace. From the original technique, the artist uses only the knots. The thread is not cut and the knots do not form the classical flowers, but are collected in different numbers to form small ovals. When the thread is stretched vertically, these ovals resemble many small leaflets attached to an imperceptible branch. “I was thinking about the choices we make every day and I compared them to the knots the shuttle creates in the thread. Hundreds, thousands of choices that create something, that make us who we are. With the projectThe WoodI want to create a work in which the male and the female coexist and are dependent on each other. A functional dependence that blends so perfectly that the edges no longer show. In fact, the installationThe Wooduses the male thread of men’s clothing and the female technique of frivolité embroidery. The threads, worked into their leaflets, are arranged to create a labyrinthine wood, where people can lose themselves and invent a new way out each time”.(Barbara Uccelli)
