2024 - All about Adam
A man like many others, dressed in a black suit, dances on a pile of ashes and rubble. Perhaps it is his own, that of those who preceded him and became extinct, that of a civilisation. A lot of voices crowd around him: they seem to come from an old broken TV, from a delirious and obsessive zapping.
Between collapses and rises, shocks and suspensions, that man seeks a new road, his own. And a light, to illuminate it.
From the director’s notes: “A man would never write a book about the particular situation of being a male": So wrote Simone de Beauvoir in 1949 in her masterpiece Il secondo sesso (The Second Sex). Today, those words are no longer relevant: between essays and magazines, slogans and hypotheses on the crisis of the “traditional” concept of masculinity proliferate, seemingly urgently being rewritten and approached anew. If on the one side, it is sadly on the agenda in the news, crammed with episodes of violence and abuse, a masculinity toxic to itself and to others, at the other end of the spectrum it seems to stand out, a little backed into a corner, a male afflicted by fears, weakened in perspective, incredibly uncomfortable taking on responsibilities: even if only that of building a love. In a fragmented scenario, full of shadows and full of old and new stereotypes, the hypothesis recurs; that the evolution of the male is unable to keep up with continuous, rapid, media-driven resounding rise of the female gender. A new war of the sexes? The end of traditional roles? All about Adam is a dance-based investigation into the recent history of the male, specifically the Italian male, but is also the proposal of a new code to be re-established on the ruins of a legacy that, today, seems to speak little to us.
